Recent immigrants from countries such as Somalia, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Ethiopian experience poverty in Canada. According to figure 3.3 of the textbook recent immigrants have the highest child poverty rates in comparison to aboriginals, ind ividuals with disabilities and children (Poverty in Canada, pg. 69) Members from the countries listed above tend to fall below the Statistics Canada "Low Income Cut-Off" the reason for such low income is mainly the result of discrimination and racism. Table 3.3 of the textbook states 27.4 recent immigrants earn income through low/minimum wages (Poverty in Canada, pg. 78). The social determinants of health these groups face that lead them further into poverty are employment insecurity and working condition. Aboriginals, people of colour and recent immigrants have lower paying jobs resulting to low income which leads to food insecurity. According to the textbook Social Determinants of Health, mothers tend to experience higher levels of food insecurity because they rather comprise their hunger for their child (Social Determinants of Health pg. 188). Other social determinants of health that lead further into poverty is education specifically early childhood education and care. A child's early development can help initiate a plate form for factors such as income, lifestyle, education levels and status producing a successful individual. Question Number Two Canadian policies have led many to poverty due to employment gap, the low-income gap, housing being on the rise, limited universal health provisions, support for individuals with disabilities is limited and child care benefit. However, it seems like public policy makers do not want to address poverty. During the lecture presented by Dr. Dennis Raphael the power points suggested that there are two approaches of considering public policy in Canada. One is the Marxist/materialist view where the government developed policies to serve the interests of economic elites such as owners and managers of large corporations focusing on maximizing their profit. The Marxist model suggests that elected officials focus on implementing policies in the best interest of economic elites. Resulting them to control the public agenda. Canada one of the richest developed countries in the world, however our welfare state is poor compared to other nations such as Denmark or Sweden. The reason of how these policies are related to the form of the Canadian welfare state is mainly because either the consensus model where the welfare state is the result of the democratic policy making that responded to the governments through a pluralistic view with equality and justice (Poverty in Canada, pg.441). Or, the conflict model where the welfare state is through social movements of groups such as working individuals fighting for their rights of freedom. Cotton changed the course of the American economic and racial future, because of the mass production of textiles. The cotton quantities increased considerably. The South was producing and exporting over sixty- seven percent of the world’s cotton by 1840 which gave the region strong economic power. As the cotton production continued to grow it required more manpower or slaves. The supply of slaves needed for growing of such production was restricted, making slaves more valuable resulting in the domestic slave trade. The domestic slave trade emerged as a crucial commercial enterprise during the 1800 and 1860, which resulted in white planters looking for new slaves in the upper South states. While in the stock market he decided that he did not want to continue in the field of law so he quit school and went on to write many books that were inspired by his long life. â€Å"Should the experience of China silence those who think that democracy is good for growth?† A democracy is ‘a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives.’ In this case it can be said that China does not qualify as a democratic country, however it is the world’s fastest growing economy in the world and has been described as the second industrial revolution. This therefore suggests that the argument for democracy being the only solution to economic growth isn’t correct yet perhaps it was other factors other than political state of China which led to its boom economy. For the purpose of this argument, it can be assumed that China is a planned economy yet in reality, although limited, regional governments have limited democracy e.g. Hong Kong. China is the world’s leading exporter which would indicate to China’s prosperity as it refers to their industrial revolution, this is due to China having an enormous pool of cheap labour, large scopes of land in which manufacturing can be fully accommodated and too, on large scales it also has a long sea border which facilitates exporting. Factors such as these, give testimony to the idea of in fact China having mass economic growth which doesn’t involve political reasoning and economic growth was almost naturally occurring to China. However, it could be argued that it is due to the political system of the country, the government is able to direct people into areas of work where economic growth is most pronounced and therefore, labour is used to maximum efficiency. If economic growth is to continue in the way it has done especially in the last 20 years, it cannot continue to rely solely on trade exports; this is because other countries can’t continue to im port more goods from China as they will eventually be faced with financial struggles. A problem that perhaps needs to be remedied is the domestic demand within China, if the people of China continue to save money on the whole and don’t spend as much typical to a developed country such as Britain, predictably they will stop having economic growth. Another significant drawback is to mention the GDP per capita, this measures the real economic power of the average citizen in China. This is very low in China which indicates a very low standard of living, so to measure the level of economic growth in China is not necessarily the right measure to address the recent economic successes. In recent years, the currency of China has increased but still not to the extent that America believes it should have. An increase of 2.1% does not seem to totally honour or reflect the extent of economic growth China has actually experienced. It is by speculation that perhaps due to financial strategies such as by having low value Renminbi cheaper exports are therefore made possible, America has repeatedly brought this up at the WTO as it leads to unemployment in America.
